About Virlouise

I believe that good music is music that serves a need. In other words, it is always the listener who knows best what good music is. It's all a matter of taste. So then, is there such a thing as bad music? I believe that would be music that no one likes. This leads me to the reality that all music has to be tested on an audience. When the audience goes crazy over you then you know you got something. Of course this comes with the assumption that the performance is in front of an audience that likes the style of music being performed.

The acts that will have the Virlouise label attached to them will almost always be performing acts who pretty much know who their audience is.

I believe there is such a thing as good lyric writing and a good song. I know when I listen to a song and it gets to me and I start trying to sing along and I want to hear the song over and over again.

I believe in instrumental music as well and Virlouise will have that as well. I know when a piece of music grabs me. As a small child I loved Green Sleeves; it was my favorite tune. I also loved hearing my mother play Chopin on the piano and I loved hearing the Flamenco guitar music. In my twenties I got into country and bluegrass music and went nuts over guys like Doc Watson, Merle Watson, and Dan Crary. Now I listen to and record everything from Jazz to Hip Hop. That's why this tiny sprout of a label is and will be, (no matter how small it stays or how big it becomes) multi-genre.
